The Business Education Department offers a variety of courses designed for students who plan to continue study in business or related fields in college, students who plan immediate post-high school employment, and students who wish to develop business skills for lifelong personal use. We believe that to live, learn, and work successfully in an increasingly complex and information-rich society, students must be able to use technology effectively.

Course Offerings

Accounting I (5 credits)
This course provides practical financial information for an owner of a business, a clerical worker, retail personnel, or personal use. Students will become familiar with business forms, vocabulary, organization and procedures. It offers vocational accounting practice and will aid students in discovering their interest and aptitude for a career in the financial or accounting field. Exposure to automated accounting is achieved through completion of a business simulation. In addition, students will be using the software QuickBooks. Using this they will create a new company, receive and make bank deposits, set up and do payroll, and work with taxes. A necessary course for anyone who wants to major in business at the college level.

Accounting II (5 credits)
This course is the second in a sequence that provides for the study of accounting procedures as applied to partnership and corporate forms of business organization. Emphasis is placed on broadening the accounting fundamentals covered in Accounting I through analysis and interpretation of records and financial reports. Utilization of the computer will provide students with a realistic approach to automated accounting procedures. Accounting I must be successfully completed as a prerequiste.

Notetaking (5 credits)
The primary purpose of this course is to prepare students to take complete notes for future lecture courses. An alphabetic shorthand system acts as the basis of the program, with live and taped lectures, videos, printed materials and films providing the source for the notetaking experiences. The study skills segment of the course is designed to help students learn important study skills and apply them successfully to college work. Topics covered include essential writing skills, building student's abilities to communicate effectively and correctly, as well as setting goals and developing good time management skills.

Computer Applications I (5 credits)
This course will benefit students during their high school and college years or in the work force. In a WINDOWS environment, students will gain proficiency using the computer system while developing word processing skills and document processing features using the software WORD. The basic features of a spreadsheet and database program are explored using the software EXCEL and ACCESS. Desktop publishing will be introduced using the software MICROSOFT PUBLISHER, and presentation software using POWER POINT will be explored. Emphasis on integration of language arts skills and basic mathematical skills are a part of this course.

Computer Applications II (5 credits)
This course will benefit students going to college or into the work force directly. Students will be taught to use advanced computer application features to facilitate their ability to continuously update their technology skills in this ever-changing field. Students will continue their skill development in a word processing program, WORD; a spreadsheet program, EXCEL; FRONT PAGE for web design; a presentation program, POWERPOINT and the INTERNET. They will become familiar with the database program, ACCESS and will integrate these software programs in order to complete simulations as part of the final projects in this course. All work will be done on the computer using the application tasks that relate to current work environment standards.
